Best Time to Visit Tibet 2026: Why April, May, June, September & October are the Golden Months

If you are planning a trip to the "Roof of the World," timing is everything. While Tibet is a year-round destination, travel experts and seasoned trekkers agree: April, May, June, September, and October are the absolute best months to visit Tibet.

During these two "Golden Windows" (Spring and Autumn), you’ll find the perfect balance of stable weather, comfortable temperatures, and the highest visibility for Himalayan peaks like Mt. Everest.

Spring: April, May, and June

Spring in Tibet is the season of rebirth. As the winter ice thaws, the plateau awakens with vibrant colors and clear skies.

April: Peach Blossoms & Fresh Air

April marks the start of the tourist season. The famous Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival (usually late March to mid-April) transforms eastern Tibet into a pink paradise.

Notes

Average Temp: 0℃ to 15℃

Highlight: Best chance for clear views of Mt. Everest and Mt. Namcha Barwa before the summer clouds arrive.

May: The Everest Climbing Window

May is widely considered the best month for visiting Everest Base Camp (EBC). Most mountaineers attempt to summit Everest in May due to the stable "weather window" between the winter winds and the summer monsoon.

Notes

Average Temp: 5℃ to 18℃

Highlight: Ideal for the Saga Dawa Festival (celebrating Buddha's birth/enlightenment).

June: Lush Landscapes & Alpine Lakes

By June, the plateau turns green. It’s the perfect time to visit high-altitude lakes like Namtso and Yamdrok Lake, as the frozen waters have completely melted into brilliant shades of turquoise.

Notes

Average Temp: 10℃ to 23℃

Highlight: Mild weather, longer days, and vibrant Tibetan life.

Autumn: September and October

Autumn is often called the "most beautiful season in Tibet." The air is crisp, the visibility is at its peak, and the landscape turns into a golden masterpiece.

September: The Golden Harvest

As the monsoon rains fade, the sky becomes incredibly blue. In the valleys around Lhasa and Shigatse, you can see farmers harvesting golden highland barley.

Notes

Average Temp: 7℃ to 21℃

Highlight: Best time for trekking from Old Tingri to EBC or the Ganden to Samye route.

October: Peak Visibility & Photography

October is the month for photographers. With almost zero rainfall and dry air, the snow-capped mountains stand out sharply against the deep blue sky.

Notes

Average Temp: 2℃ to 17℃

Highlight: Early October coincides with the Chinese National Day holiday; book at least 2 months in advance!

Tibet Travel Tips for the Golden Months

Layers are Essential: Even in the "warm" months of May or June, temperatures can drop below freezing at night, especially at EBC or Mt. Kailash. Bring a thermal base layer and a windproof down jacket.

Sun Protection: The plateau's UV radiation is extreme during these clear months. High-SPF sunscreen and polarized sunglasses are non-negotiable.

Permit Processing: For travel in high-demand months like May and October, ensure your Tibet Travel Permit application is submitted at least 20–30 days before departure.
