Tibet Travel Permit Updates for 2024 Season: What Every Traveler Needs to Know

The majestic Himalayan range, accessible with the correct permits.

As the 2024 travel season approaches, the Tibet Tourism Bureau has announced several important updates regarding the Tibet Travel Permit application process. These changes are designed to streamline entry for international tourists while ensuring the preservation of the region's delicate ecosystem and cultural heritage.

New Processing Times

One of the most significant changes is the adjustment to processing times. While we previously recommended applying at least 20 days in advance, the new digital submission system has reduced the average processing time to approximately 10-12 working days for standard tours. However, for sensitive areas like Mount Kailash, we still strongly advise a 30-day lead time to account for the additional military permits required.

Visa-Free Policies

Travelers from select countries enjoying China's new 15-day visa-free policy should note that a Tibet Travel Permit is still mandatory. The visa waiver allows entry into mainland China, but the Autonomous Region of Tibet maintains its separate permit requirement. You must have your permit in hand before boarding your flight or train to Lhasa.

Important Reminder

Independent travel is not permitted in Tibet. You must book your tour through a registered travel agency like ours, which will handle the permit application on your behalf. Your guide will carry the permit during your stay.

Mount Kailash & Western Tibet

For those planning the spiritual Kora around Mount Kailash, strict quota systems remain in place for the Saga Dawa festival period. The Aliens' Travel Permit and Military Area Entry Permit procedures have been integrated into a unified application for easier processing, but early booking is essential to secure your spot.

We are excited to welcome you to the Roof of the World this year. If you have any specific questions about your eligibility or itinerary, please use the contact form on this page to reach our permit specialists directly.
